Our first stop comes halfway in the ancient town of Chaeronea to see the Lion of Chaeronea, commemorating a historical battle, and the bust of Plutarch, a famed philosopher and author of “Parallel Lives,” that dates to 45-120 AD. From there, we’ll proceed to The Archaeological Museum of Delphi. A shelter to the extensive artifacts unearthed during excavations at the Delphi oracle and its vicinity, the museum is located adjacent to the archaeological site, and is one of the top must-see museums in Greece due to the breadth and quality of artifacts it includes that covers over a thousand years.

Next, we’ll travel to the Oracle of Delphi. Dating back to 1400 BC, this was one of the most powerful religious institutions and the most important shrines in all of Greece. Walking up the mountainside, you’ll discover the Temple of Apollo, the god of music, harmony, light and healing, which is supported by a huge retaining wall built from limestone polygonal masonry, known as the Ischegaon (“that which retains the earth”), and boasts around 800 visible inscriptions. An integral part of the temple, you will see the theater of Delphi, which is directly connected to mythos and cult of the god. Next, you will see the best preserved stadium in Greece, the Stadium of Delphi, that overlooks the temple of Apollo from the highest spot of Delphi. Winding down, enjoy a local meal and a coffee in a quaint nearby village before returning to Athens.

If you choose the extended experience, our trip will include a visit to the nearby historic Monastery of Saint Luke. This historic walled monastery promises incredible views and was founded in the mid-10th century. It is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites as one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art.
